The Union of Journalists of the Free African Press (UJPLA) has voiced strong condemnation and deep concern over Mali’s decision to ban the sale and distribution of the Jeune Afrique magazine nationwide.
According to the UJPLA, this move represents a serious infringement on press freedom, freedom of expression, and the fundamental right of Malian citizens to access diverse, accurate, and independent information.
Jeune Afrique, a long-standing pan-African publication, has played a pivotal role in fostering democratic debate, political analysis, and socio-economic discussions across the continent for decades. The magazine’s prohibition sets a dangerous precedent and signals an authoritarian drift that contradicts Mali’s international human rights commitments.
The UJPLA emphasizes that press freedom is not a privilege granted by authorities but an inalienable right enshrined in global and African conventions, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
In response, the UJPLA has taken the following actions:
- Firmly condemns Mali’s arbitrary decision to ban Jeune Afrique.
- Demands the immediate reversal of this restrictive measure.
- Urges Malian authorities to uphold transparency, foster dialogue, and respect fundamental liberties.
- Calls on human rights and press freedom organizations to unite against this oppressive action.
The UJPLA reaffirms its unwavering commitment to defending press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists across Africa.
