Mali: jnim propaganda video reveals evolving strategic depth

The armed group JNIM, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda, has released a propaganda video showcasing its April 25 assault on the military camp and airport in Sévaré, a key location near Mopti in central Mali.

This particular strike on Sévaré was part of a series of synchronized attacks targeting multiple Malian urban centers, executed by JNIM jihadists alongside Tuareg separatists from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).

This propaganda footage offers crucial insights into the evolving strategic approaches of JNIM, as observed by analyst Bakary Sambe.

“JNIM has demonstrated a significant capability to penetrate urban environments and highly strategic locations such as the Sévaré airport and military base. This also poses a considerable challenge to both the Malian army and its Russian allies,” Sambe emphasized.

The coordinated offensives in April culminated in the recapture of Kidal by separatist forces and the tragic assassination of Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara in Kati, a town near Bamako.

These attacks also resulted in 16 injuries, according to figures released by the Malian government.

“What JNIM has successfully achieved is gradually positioning Mali in a state that is neither fully at peace nor entirely at war. Within this ambiguity, they are deploying an increasingly aggressive strategy,” explained Bakary Sambe. He also highlighted the rise of figures like Bina Diarra, a JNIM spokesperson, who works to establish the group “as a legitimate political actor.”

The release of this propaganda video coincides with Malian authorities announcing rewards for information leading to the location or capture of JNIM leaders, underscoring the government’s ongoing counter-terrorism efforts against the group.
