Mali military reshuffle after april security setbacks

The Republic of Mali has initiated a sweeping overhaul of its military command structure following the coordinated assaults of April 25, 2026, which were claimed by the Jama’at Nusrat ul-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). These attacks resulted in the tragic loss of former Defense Minister General Sadio Camara.

A special edition of the Official Gazette released on May 29 outlined the sweeping changes, with numerous high-ranking officers reassigned to pivotal roles within the Malian Armed Forces and the Unified Force of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Key appointments in the military leadership

Brigadier General Makan Alassane Diarra has been elevated to lead the AES Unified Force. Previously serving as Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, he succeeds Brigadier General Daouda Traoré. His extensive background in military operations across eastern Mali played a decisive role in his selection.

To fill the void left at the General Staff of the Armed Forces, authorities appointed Brigadier General Mamadou Massaoulé Samaké, who transitioned from his position as a strategic advisor. Additionally, Colonel-Major Yacouba Sanogo has been designated as the new Strategic Advisor to the General Staff.

Operational command reshuffled

The restructuring extends to field operations, with Colonel-Major Karim Traoré assuming command of the Eastern Theater, Colonel-Major Didier Dembélé taking charge of the Southern Theater, and Colonel Issa Bagayoko overseeing the Central Theater.

These strategic moves follow a series of decisions made in response to April’s devastating attacks. Transition President General Assimi Goïta has personally reassumed the Defense portfolio, while General Oumar Diarra has been appointed as the Minister Delegate overseeing this critical sector.

Through this command reshuffle, Bamako aims to bolster its response capabilities against an escalating security threat and enhance coordination between national operations and those conducted under the AES framework.
