The transfer saga surrounding Mason Greenwood has taken yet another unexpected turn, with the English winger now set to join Turkish giants Fenerbahçe instead of Italian club AS Roma. This abrupt shift in destination has reignited debates across European football circles, particularly in Italy where the player’s original destination was a hot topic.
Olympique de Marseille (OM) faces mounting financial pressure, forcing the club to offload Greenwood to balance their books and reduce wage expenses. Although the Italian capital had been the anticipated destination, the player’s eventual move to Fenerbahçe underscores the unpredictability of modern football transfers. The AS Roma hierarchy, led by manager Gian Piero Gasperini, had reportedly made Greenwood a top priority before the deal collapsed.
Italian pundits question Greenwood’s long-term fit in Serie A
Italian football analysts have not minced words in criticizing the situation. Roberto Pruzzo, a prominent journalist, expressed skepticism about Greenwood’s future in Serie A, stating, “This kind of negotiation always ends badly. There’s doubt whether the player truly wants to join Roma, and in the end, he ends up at Fenerbahçe. It’s rare to hear, ‘This is the player I want,’ and have the deal completed within hours.”
Fernando Orsi, another commentator, added, “Football doesn’t hinge on Greenwood. He doesn’t strike me as a reliable individual, and with half that transfer fee, Roma could have found a better fit for Gasperini’s system. The World Cup is a showcase for players to shine.”
Roma’s alternative targets gain momentum
Paolo Marcacci, another football expert, has already shifted focus to potential replacements for Greenwood. He highlighted Moreira as a potential ideal replacement, noting, “Moreira is a top-tier player whose profile aligns perfectly with Gasperini’s philosophy. His stock has risen, especially after the World Cup, but we’ll need to see his form. The same goes for Nusa, Garnacho, and others. There’s also Tresoldi, who delivered a strong league campaign. Gasperini could shape Moreira into an even more complete player. Greenwood’s salary was beyond reach for Italian clubs, and Roma’s decision to forgo a Champions League spot makes this move even more significant.”
