Nantes vs Toulouse match halted as angry fans storm pitch

Disgruntled supporters interrupted play as Nantes confirmed their relegation with a goalless draw.

The final Ligue 1 showdown of the season between FC Nantes and Toulouse took an unexpected turn on Sunday, May 17, when supporters stormed the pitch at Stade de la Beaujoire. The match, which had reached the 20-minute mark with the score still locked at 0-0, was brought to a halt as tensions erupted.

Several dozen individuals dressed in black, many wearing club colors and hoods, broke through security barriers in the Loire Tribune. They entered the pitch carrying smoke flares, forcing players from both teams to flee toward the locker rooms. The invasion occurred just as Nantes had already secured their relegation to Ligue 2, while Toulouse, sitting in 10th place, had nothing left to play for in the standings.

Coach’s confrontation cut short

Vahid Halilhodzic, Nantes’ head coach, attempted to confront the intruders on the pitch but was restrained by a staff member. His frustration was later captured on camera in the locker room, where he expressed his anger openly. Meanwhile, most of the invaders retreated back to the stands, though the match remained suspended.

A crisis team reportedly formed to assess the situation, involving representatives from the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) and public authorities, to determine how the game would proceed.
