Niger crisis: Benin’s democrats urge peaceful resolution

Political tensions in the Niger and the looming threat of a West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) military intervention have raised serious concerns for the Beninese opposition party ‘Les Démocrates’. In an official statement released over the weekend, party leader Eric Houndété expressed grave apprehension over the unfolding coup d’état in Niger, a neighboring nation to Benin, describing the situation as “a precarious moment that risks emboldening opportunistic actors to exploit the crisis for selfish gains.”

The opposition party unequivocally condemns all violent seizures of power, regardless of their guise, while deploring the alarming resurgence of military takeovers across West Africa. According to Houndété, these crises often thrive in environments riddled with “systemic injustice, suppressed freedoms, exploitation of citizens, elite capture of national wealth, institutional hijacking, voter disenfranchisement, constitutional manipulations, and electoral fraud.”

Advocating for diplomacy over confrontation

Despite the gravity of the situation, Les Démocrates has urged WAEMU member states to prioritize peaceful dialogue as the primary means of conflict resolution. The party emphasizes that negotiation aligns with the cultural values and traditions of the region, while also stressing the need for preemptive measures to combat constitutional coups, poor governance, and exclusionary policies across all member states.

The opposition party raised critical questions regarding the legal basis for declaring war on a fellow WAEMU member state and the procedures through which the government would seek parliamentary approval to deploy military forces against a neighboring country. Houndété also questioned “who would bear the financial burden of such a military endeavor.”

Rather than endorsing a “hazardous and reckless path of force,” the party calls on the Beninese government to champion dialogue, negotiation, reconciliation, and mutual understanding as the cornerstone of regional stability. Houndété argues that such an approach would not only secure peace for Niger but also safeguard the shared interests of both nations and their peoples. In this spirit, Les Démocrates reaffirms its commitment to fostering national political dialogue as an essential tool for promoting peace and sustainable development in Benin.
