Niger implements digital payment systems for vaccination campaigns

During the April 2026 National Vaccination Days targeting polio, the Niamey region successfully transitioned to a digital remuneration system for health agents and community workers. Supported by technical expertise from the World Health Organization (WHO) in Niger, over 1,200 participants received their payments via mobile platforms, replacing the traditional cash distribution system.

Enhanced efficiency and transaction tracking

This modernization effort led to 99% of all payments being successfully processed within 48 hours of the campaign’s end. By transferring funds directly to the mobile accounts of workers, the initiative significantly improved financial traceability and reduced the logistical burdens associated with handling physical currency. While initial challenges regarding data quality and digital tool usage were noted, they were effectively resolved through dedicated training provided by WHO Niger.

Strategic planning for a digital health ecosystem

The success of this rollout was built on foundational work conducted in late 2025. From September 29 to October 3, 2025, WHO Niger organized a specialized workshop to strengthen the digital payment capabilities of national and local health officials. Facilitated by experts from the WHO Regional Office for Africa, this training helped the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene design and plan a comprehensive national framework for electronic financial transactions.

Implementing digital payments for health personnel is a critical step toward increasing transparency and accountability in public health initiatives. By ensuring faster and more secure compensation, this system boosts the motivation of frontline staff and improves the overall performance of medical interventions. Following the positive results in Niamey, this model is expected to be expanded across Niger, integrating into various other health programs and campaigns to deliver tangible progress on the ground.
