Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a stark warning regarding the deteriorating condition of markets across Sénégal. He specifically highlighted the advanced state of disrepair affecting numerous commercial infrastructures, many of which date back to the 1970s.

During his address, the head of government underscored the significant safety risks prevalent in these commercial hubs. He drew attention to a concerning statistic: between 2013 and 2024, fifty-three markets nationwide experienced devastating fires.

Responding to this critical situation, Ousmane Sonko introduced the Market Modernization and Management Program (PROMOGEM). This initiative’s strategic plan, spanning 2025-2029, is designed to comprehensively restructure 528 existing markets and facilitate the construction of 67 brand-new, modern commercial spaces.

The Prime Minister also advocated for an institutional overhaul of PROMOGEM to bolster its administrative and financial independence. To support this vital undertaking, a substantial allocation of 57.5 billion CFA francs has been earmarked over a four-year period, integrated within the State’s Public Investment Plan.

According to the Prime Minister, the overarching goal is to establish a cutting-edge network of markets throughout Sénégal. This ambitious project will feature stringent management protocols, fostering collaboration between local territorial authorities and the national private sector.
