Tottenham Hotspur have completed a blockbuster signing this transfer window, securing the services of Italy international Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United. The 23-year-old midfielder, known for his exceptional ball-winning abilities and vision, joins the Premier League club on a long-term deal worth an initial €108 million (approximately £92.5 million), with potential performance-related bonuses pushing the total towards €117 million.
The deal marks a significant investment by Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi, who had identified Tonali as his top transfer target to reinforce the midfield following a series of inconsistent performances last season. The Italian international, who captained the Azzurri to victory at Euro 2024, becomes the club’s most expensive signing in history and sets a new benchmark for Italian footballers transferred abroad.
tonali’s career highlights and transfer implications
Tonali’s arrival in London follows an impressive rise through the ranks at Brescia and AC Milan before establishing himself as a key figure at Newcastle. His partnership with Bruno Guimarães in midfield was instrumental in the Magpies’ top-four finish last season. The move to Tottenham represents not just a financial record but a statement of ambition from the North London club, which has been actively rebuilding under De Zerbi’s tactical vision.
The transfer fee surpasses the previous record for an Italian player abroad, previously held by Mateo Retegui (€61.8 million to Al-Ittihad). It also reflects the increasingly competitive nature of Premier League spending, where clubs are willing to invest heavily in proven midfield talent to challenge Manchester City’s dominance.
reaction and next steps
While Tonali’s medicals and contract signing have been finalized, Tottenham’s medical staff will now conduct thorough assessments before the player officially joins the squad for pre-season training. Club sources confirm that Tonali will be unveiled to fans later this week, with the official press conference scheduled for Thursday morning at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The acquisition of Tonali signals Tottenham’s intent to compete at the highest level both domestically and in European competitions. With the summer transfer window still open, Spurs supporters will be eagerly awaiting further announcements as De Zerbi continues to reshape the squad in his image.
