Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, has taken a firm stance to block Marcus Rashford’s potential transfer to any of six Premier League rivals this summer. Despite the forward’s clear desire to leave Old Trafford, the club’s leadership is determined to prevent the embarrassment of seeing their academy graduate thrive at a direct domestic competitor.
United’s hierarchy draws a red line on domestic transfers
The billionaire businessman intervened to halt negotiations for Rashford’s transfer to Premier League clubs this transfer window. The 28-year-old striker returned to Carrington for pre-season training after a loan spell at Barcelona, but his long-term future at Manchester United appears increasingly uncertain. While Ratcliffe is open to removing Rashford from the wage bill, he has made it abundantly clear that he will not allow rivals such as Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, or Aston Villa to benefit from strengthening their squads with the England international.
These restrictions extend beyond permanent deals. Ratcliffe has also rejected loan requests from multiple clubs, including Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Tottenham. Within the club’s hierarchy, there is deep concern that Rashford’s presence elsewhere could play a decisive role in helping a rival secure UEFA Champions League qualification—a scenario that would be viewed as utterly humiliating for Manchester United’s leadership.
Barcelona’s rejection and the Gordon deal
During his time on loan at Barcelona last season, Rashford rediscovered his form, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances. However, the Catalan giants opted against making the move permanent, instead splashing out £69 million (€80 million) to sign Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon. Barcelona chose not to activate Rashford’s £26 million (€30 million) purchase option, leaving the Manchester United forward’s future in limbo.
Barcelona’s head coach, Hansi Flick, has since ruled out the possibility of Rashford returning, citing financial and squad complications. Flick, who spoke highly of the English striker, stated: “We don’t know what’s happening with players on loan; our situation is complex. But I truly enjoyed working with him. He’s an outstanding player and an even better person. I’ll miss his presence in the team—he was missed even when he wasn’t here. That’s just how it is.”
Carrick’s dilemma and Rashford’s contract impasse
After the international break, Rashford joined Manchester United’s pre-season camp in Dublin ahead of a friendly against Leeds United. However, his inclusion in the squad appears to be a temporary arrangement. The forward is expected to hold pivotal discussions with interim manager Michael Carrick following the upcoming match against AC Milan in Poland. Rashford, who turns 28 this month, is keen to turn the page on his time at Old Trafford and pursue a career revival elsewhere.
The situation is further complicated by the remaining two years on his current contract, which runs until 2028. Rashford has the option to remain at the club for the next 24 months before leaving on a free transfer—a scenario that would result in significant financial losses for Manchester United.

For now, Rashford’s immediate focus remains on his personal future and whether a major European club will step forward to meet Manchester United’s valuation and wage demands.
