Strengthening bonds: Russia and AES allies map out shared future in Niamey
Niamey became the focal point of regional diplomacy this past Wednesday, July 8, as it hosted the second round of high-level consultations between foreign ministers of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and Russia.
The gathering brought together key figures including Niger’s Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop, and Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, alongside Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s top diplomat. This meeting solidified fresh areas of alignment between the four nations’ diplomatic agendas.
Speaking on behalf of the Malian delegation, Diop highlighted the “fruitful and systematic exchanges” between AES and Russia, emphasizing their impact across multiple domains. “Our partnership has delivered measurable progress—not just in defense cooperation but also in economic and trade initiatives, all underpinned by a shared strategic vision,” he noted.
The ministers underscored the urgent need to bolster regional counter-terrorism efforts. Specifically, they called for enhanced military cooperation to strengthen the operational readiness of the AES Joint Force. Additionally, they reiterated the importance of deepening economic collaboration to implement the Second-Year Action Plan of the confederation.
Lavrov, addressing the forum, reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to a “mutually advantageous partnership” with the AES. He stressed Moscow’s unwavering support for two core objectives: securing the Sahel region and fostering sustainable development to improve living standards for local communities.
This session follows the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow in April 2025, marking another step in the Russian foreign minister’s ongoing diplomatic outreach across Africa.
