In a decisive statement on Thursday, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, addressed the Constitutional Council’s ruling that declared the recently passed constitutional reform law unconstitutional. As the leader of the Pastef party, he acknowledged the decision rendered by the « Seven Sages » and emphasized that it applies universally.
The National Assembly leader stressed that regardless of differing opinions on the motivations behind the ruling, its authority is final. « Beyond any commentary or analysis of the reasoning, one fact remains undeniable: this decision is binding on all parties. Acknowledged, » he stated in a public post.
Sonko framed the situation as a testament to the strength of Senegal’s institutions. He highlighted that when each body—legislative, executive, or judicial—fulfills its designated role within the constitutional framework, the risk of crisis diminishes significantly.
The Assembly President reaffirmed his commitment to the legislature’s mandate, vowing to continue its work with unwavering dedication. « The National Assembly will proceed without hesitation, carrying out its constitutional duties. Laws will be debated, passed, or rejected in service of the Senegalese people, whose trust and dignity we honor, » he declared.
