The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, addressed the nation on Thursday following a landmark ruling by the Constitutional Council, which struck down a recently approved constitutional reform bill as unconstitutional. As the leader of the Pastef movement, Sonko acknowledged the decision of the seven constitutional judges without reservation, emphasizing that their ruling applies universally to all branches of government.
In a public statement, he declared, « Beyond any debate over the reasoning behind this decision, one truth remains undeniable: this ruling is binding on everyone. I accept it unreservedly. »
Sonko framed the episode as a testament to Senegal’s institutional strength, asserting that when each branch of government fulfills its constitutional duties within its designated scope, the nation remains shielded from crises. He underscored the Assembly’s commitment to its legislative mandate, vowing to continue its work without hesitation.
