Senegal fans must fund world cup 2026 travel themselves

Senegal’s Ministry of Sports has confirmed that the government will not cover travel expenses for supporters heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. The announcement, made by Minister Khady Diène Gaye, dispels earlier speculation about an official fan mobilization effort.

No state-backed support for supporters

The decision follows visa complications and procedural rejections, which prevented key supporter leaders from securing travel authorization. Khady Diène Gaye clarified the government’s stance during a radio interview, stating:

« While each nation retains sovereignty over its decisions, this edition will not include state-funded support for supporters. The names submitted—including three supporter committee presidents—were ultimately denied. »

She added, « We will not facilitate the movement of fans from Dakar to the United States. »

Fan support relies on private means

The declaration closes the door on any official fan delegation for the 2026 tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Senegalese supporters will need to arrange their own travel or rely on the diaspora to cheer on the Lions of Teranga during the global event.
