Senegal politics: APR official challenges Sonko to present evidence to courts

A leading figure from the Alliance Pour la République (APR) has publicly challenged Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to back up his allegations with concrete evidence in court, rather than through political rhetoric. The call comes amid growing scrutiny over governance and accountability in Senegal.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko speaking at the assembly

Maimouna Sène, a prominent member of the APR’s national executive committee, has sharply criticized Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, questioning the basis of his recent public statements. In her remarks, she emphasized that accountability should be a core institutional responsibility, not a tool for political posturing.

Sène dismissed what she described as « judicial populism » and « distractions » in the current discourse, urging Sonko to demonstrate his claims through legal channels if evidence exists. « If you have proof, take it to court and let the judges do their work in peace, » she stated directly to the Prime Minister.

Demands for economic and social focus

The APR representative also highlighted the urgent need for the government to prioritize the economic and social welfare of Senegal’s citizens. She stressed tackling rising inflation, boosting job creation, and reviving economic growth as immediate priorities.

Criticizing Sonko’s approach as overly rhetorical, Sène called on him to shift from words to action, urging greater transparency and integrity in public administration. « Leadership demands more than statements, » she remarked, « it requires tangible results. »
