During the launch of the second edition of the Sénégal Space Week 2026, General Birame Diop, Minister of Armed Forces representing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, delivered a powerful message to experts and international partners. He emphasized that modern security challenges extend beyond conventional borders, with space technology, data analytics, and emerging innovations playing a pivotal role in safeguarding national interests.
The Minister underscored how space-based capabilities—such as satellite imagery, geospatial mapping, and advanced intelligence tools—enable the nation to monitor its territory more effectively. These technologies are critical in combating evolving threats, including terrorism, maritime piracy, and cross-border crime. He noted that leveraging space technology is no longer optional but a necessity for modern defense and strategic planning.
General Diop also praised the Agence Sénégalaise d’Études Spatiales for its ongoing initiatives in space research and development. Several international partnerships were formalized during the event to bolster Senegal’s collaboration in satellite technology, data sharing, and joint defense projects. These agreements aim to enhance the country’s capacity to respond to security challenges through shared expertise and resources.
Empowering the youth for a space-driven future
Beyond infrastructure and technology, the Minister stressed the importance of nurturing local talent. He called for investment in education, research, and innovation to equip the next generation of Senegalese professionals with skills in space science, digital technologies, and engineering. By doing so, Senegal can position itself as a leader in Africa’s space sector while fostering self-reliance in critical technologies.
The event also paid tribute to General Mansour Seck, a pioneering figure in Senegal’s aviation history, whose contributions laid the foundation for the nation’s aerospace ambitions. His legacy serves as an inspiration for the country’s growing space community.
