Senegal's PM Sonko vows strict enforcement of anti-LGBTQ+ laws

The Prime Minister’s statements come as part of an ongoing national debate about legal enforcement and government policy direction regarding LGBTQ+ issues in Senegal. Speaking on the uniformity of the law, Ousmane Sonko declared, « No one will be shielded, particularly those wielding influence whose actions fuel the problem. Laws in Senegal apply equally to all, without exception. »

He further argued that the current situation stems from decades of inaction by previous administrations. « This is not a new issue. Past governments failed to address it adequately. If they had acted sooner, we wouldn’t be facing this crisis today. »

Addressing international criticism, the Prime Minister singled out Western partners, stating, « Senegalese society overwhelmingly supports these laws. The only opposition comes from abroad—particularly from France. We categorically reject any external dictation on our internal affairs. »

Ousmane Sonko dismissed calls for a legislative moratorium, asserting, « Even African intellectuals attempting to meddle will find no success. The process will proceed without delay. »
