Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has once again underscored the government’s resolve to toughen laws pertaining to homosexuality in Senegal, reinforcing the executive’s firm stance on this contentious issue. His remarks come at a time when the debate over legal enforcement and policy direction remains highly charged.

Addressing the scope of legislative measures, Sonko stressed their all-encompassing nature and uniform application. He declared, « No one will be shielded, especially the influential figures who fuel this problem. Laws are crafted to be impartial, and their enforcement must be rigorous. »

He further attributed the current situation to past inaction, arguing, « This issue is not a recent development. Previous governments failed to act decisively. Had they done so, the situation would never have escalated to this point. »

Sonko also addressed criticisms from abroad, particularly from Western allies. He asserted, « There is no opposition to these laws within Senegal. External criticism stems solely from the West, notably France. We owe no explanations to them. » Rejecting calls for a legislative pause, he added, « Even African intellectuals have attempted to interfere, but no moratorium will be granted. »
