Senegal’s Sonko urges unified sovereign Africa at UPA’s 85th session

Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, extended a warm welcome to African delegates gathered in Dakar for the 85th session of the African Parliamentary Union’s Executive Committee, scheduled for June 3–4, 2026.
In his opening address, Sonko conveyed his joy and pride at hosting representatives from parliaments across Africa in Senegal’s capital. Speaking on behalf of the National Assembly and the Senegalese people, he extended fraternal greetings and a heartfelt welcome to participants hailing from multiple countries across the continent.
Sonko underscored the critical need to strengthen cooperation among African parliaments, particularly at a time when the continent faces complex political, economic, and security challenges. He stressed that such collaboration is no longer optional but a necessity for progress.
“In an era where our continent must rise to meet countless challenges, the strengthening of parliamentary cooperation has never been more vital,” he asserted.
Reaffirming his commitment to Pan-African ideals, Sonko emphasized that Africa’s future must be shaped by Africans themselves, rooted in the continent’s values, aspirations, and interests. He expressed confidence that the deliberations during this 85th session would advance the continent’s integration efforts and help realize shared goals among its peoples.
Wishing delegates a productive and enriching stay in Dakar, Sonko concluded with a resounding call for unity: “Long live African parliamentary cooperation. Long live a united and sovereign Africa.”
