The political landscape in Sénégal remains tense as tensions between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko escalate, drawing reactions from key stakeholders. Serigne Mboup, businessman and Mayor of Kaolack, recently addressed the situation during a live television appearance, voicing his deep concern over the deteriorating relationship between the two leaders.
The mayor expressed his disappointment over the rift, recalling his unwavering support for Ousmane Sonko during the legislative elections. In an exclusive interview on a national broadcast, he emphasized the importance of unity, warning that a breakdown in their alliance could hinder the nation’s progress.
An appeal for reconciliation
« This situation pains me deeply, as I had decided to step away from politics. The political climate was not what I expected. I have never campaigned for any candidate—except for Ousmane Sonko, whom I wholeheartedly supported during the elections, » Serigne Mboup stated.
He urged both leaders to prioritize reconciliation and collaboration, stressing that their partnership is vital for Sénégal’s development. « What I wish most is for Ousmane Sonko and Bassirou Diomaye Faye to move forward in peace, so I can return to what I do best—connecting with partners and investing in education, » he added.
Serigne Mboup made it clear that he remains neutral in the conflict. « I do not side with either Diomaye or Sonko. However, if President Diomaye reaches out to support my development projects for Kaolack, I will respond positively. But I will not join his political party, » he clarified.
Political conflicts and public stagnation
The Mayor of Kaolack also highlighted the broader implications of political disputes, noting that they often stall public initiatives. « When conflicts arise, nothing gets done. Today in Sénégal, progress is at a standstill, » he remarked.
