In a significant move to combat plastic pollution and champion a sustainable circular economy, SOLIBRA officially inaugurated its ECO BOX project within the commune of Treichville. This vital launch coincided with the global observance of World Plastic Bag Free Day on July 3, 2026.
Treichville was specifically chosen for this groundbreaking initiative due to the substantial volumes of plastic waste it generates daily. This waste frequently obstructs drainage systems and compromises critical sanitation infrastructure. The ECO BOX project is set to transform these discarded materials into valuable resources through a meticulously structured collection and recycling program.
This ambitious undertaking represents a collaborative effort between SOLIBRA, the local Fondation J’Adore de Treichville, and BIRWAST, a company specializing in plastic waste recycling. This powerful synergy aims to elevate waste management practices, safeguard the urban environment, and cultivate fresh economic prospects for the local community.
To ensure immediate operational readiness, essential equipment was distributed to the frontline teams. This included six robust wheelbarrows, a dedicated collection tricycle, eighty large trash bags, a dozen rakes, along with gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms, all vital tools for the project’s success.
Through the ECO BOX framework, the partnering organizations are committed to achieving several key objectives. These encompass the gradual eradication of plastic debris from canals to mitigate flood risks, the creation of meaningful employment opportunities for local youth as collection agents and drivers, and the valorization of all collected plastics through efficient recycling processes.
A crucial element of the project is public engagement. Collection agents will play a pivotal role in educating residents, encouraging responsible waste sorting habits, and fostering a pervasive culture of cleanliness throughout the commune.
The launch ceremony itself was marked by a symbolic ribbon-cutting, officially signaling the commencement of the ECO BOX project. This was followed by the handover of keys for the inaugural collection tricycle to one of the dedicated agents, who will soon begin traversing the streets of Treichville to gather plastic waste.
