Talon pledges unity as Bénin’s Senate begins historic term
Patrice Talon has officially taken the helm as the first-ever president of Bénin’s Senate, marking the start of a five-year mandate spanning 2026 to 2031. His inauguration address, delivered this Thursday, August 6, 2026, set the tone for the upper chamber’s maiden session.

In his opening remarks, Talon expressed deep appreciation to his fellow senators for entrusting the leadership of the newly elected bureau and its deputy rapporteur. The President underscored the need to cultivate a cohesive and productive legislative environment, where teamwork, consensus-building, and mutual respect prevail over political differences. Speaking before the chamber’s senior member and all elected senators, he emphasized that dignity, responsibility, and the nation’s higher interests must guide every decision.

The Senate’s inaugural bureau was elected in a closed-door session on August 6, 2026. Alongside Talon, the leadership includes Louis Vlavonou—former President of the National Assembly—as Vice President, while Alassane Seidou and Adidjatou Mathys were appointed as rapporteur and deputy rapporteur, respectively. This leadership trio is expected to steer the Senate toward its constitutional and developmental objectives.
