Cholera spreads rapidly in Tchad
The outbreak, which began in mid-June, has now spread to Hadjer Lamis province and the capital city of N’Djamena. Authorities declared the epidemic on July 24 after confirming the first fatalities. The situation remains critical as health teams work to trace contacts and isolate cases.
Vaccination drive targets 50,000 people
A coordinated vaccination campaign is underway to curb the outbreak. Health officials report that over 50,000 residents have already received the cholera vaccine. This massive immunization effort aims to protect vulnerable populations, particularly in areas with limited access to clean drinking water.
Cholera transmission risks persist
Cholera spreads through contaminated water or food. While the disease is treatable with rapid rehydration and antibiotics in severe cases, delays in treatment can prove fatal within hours. Health experts warn that inadequate sanitation infrastructure in Tchad significantly increases transmission risks.
The current outbreak follows similar cholera epidemics reported in neighboring African nations, including the Central African Republic, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, highlighting the persistent public health challenges across the region.
