Tchad joins un Green Climate Fund program at Baku urban forum

The recent participation of Chad at the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan, has yielded a significant breakthrough. The country has been officially included as the 11th eligible nation for the BCRUP program — an initiative under the UN Green Climate Fund that previously supported ten member states.

This milestone highlights Chad’s proactive stance in addressing pressing urban challenges, including devastating floods, internal displacement, and the escalating impacts of climate change on its cities.

During the forum, a high-level delegation led by Mahamat Assileck Halata, Chad’s minister overseeing environmental initiatives, met with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. The discussions centered on strategies for urban resilience and potential avenues for collaboration. As a result, an initial project proposal has been greenlit, with funding ranging from $900,000 to $1 million. This approval signals a strong commitment from UN-Habitat to expand support for Chad’s climate resilience efforts in the coming months.
