The Republic of Togo and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) are deepening their collaboration in the vital sector of higher education. Gado Tchangbedji, the Minister of Higher Education and Research, recently hosted an IsDB delegation in Lomé on Tuesday, July 14th, for a crucial working session. The discussions centered on the Support Project for the Implementation of Higher Education Reform in Sciences and Engineering (Paresi).
During the meeting, participants thoroughly reviewed the progress of this pivotal initiative, which aims to elevate the standard of university education and bolster research capabilities across scientific and technical disciplines. Both parties meticulously examined accomplishments, identified challenges encountered, and outlined strategies to accelerate the execution of planned activities.
Minister Tchangbedji commended the significant strides already made, while also urging for greater efficiency in administrative and technical procedures. This emphasis is critical to ensure that all scheduled infrastructure projects are completed within their stipulated timelines.
Key components of the Paresi project include the construction of cutting-edge multi-purpose research laboratories at the University of Lomé and the University of Kara. Additionally, a new pedagogical laboratory is slated for establishment at the École Normale Supérieure in Atakpamé. These modern facilities are expected to significantly enhance learning, research, and innovation environments within Togo’s public higher education institutions.
Jointly financed by the Togolese State and the Islamic Development Bank, the Paresi project underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing Togolese universities and aligning them with the demands of economic development. The project specifically targets strengthening educational resources, upgrading university infrastructure, and cultivating specialized skills in the fields of science and engineering.
Beyond tangible investments, the program also places a strong emphasis on fostering academic excellence. In line with this objective, scholarships were awarded last year to Master’s and Doctoral students enrolled at the universities of Lomé and Kara.
Through this strategic partnership, Togo is dedicated to strengthening its human capital and ensuring that higher education plays an increasingly impactful role in the structural transformation of the national economy.
