Addressing the persistent challenge of youth unemployment in Togo, authorities are now adopting a pragmatic strategy: transforming trained individuals into thriving rural entrepreneurs. In Kpomé, located within the Maritime region, fifty young people have successfully completed a crucial phase, receiving essential equipment to immediately launch their agricultural and livestock businesses.
This equipment distribution event, held on July 20 under the patronage of Dotsè Medjina, Secretary General of the Maritime Region Governorship and representative of the Governor, signifies the culmination of an intensive three-month professional training program focused on high-potential agropastoral sectors.
Training is not enough: the imperative of immediate material provision
A common hurdle in professional integration programs is the post-training phase. Many young people acquire valuable skills but lack the essential capital to kickstart their ventures.
In Kpomé, this conventional approach has been redefined. Following their training, beneficiaries are now equipped with comprehensive startup kits. These kits include vital tools such as power tillers, motor pumps, sprayers, seeds, fertilizers, electronic scales, rolls of fencing, irrigation and water storage systems, wheelbarrows, and construction materials.
The clear objective is to empower these new producers to commence their operations without delay, eliminating the need to secure additional funding.
Agropastoralism: a key driver for rural job creation
The fifty beneficiaries have been thoroughly prepared to operate in several sectors deemed strategic for rural development. The comprehensive program includes training in market gardening, poultry farming, raising small ruminants, and pig production.
By equipping these young individuals with appropriate tools, public authorities aim not only to foster their financial independence but also to bolster local production and invigorate rural economies throughout the region.
A strategic investment in accountability and rigor
During the ceremony, Dotsè Medjina underscored the significant responsibility that accompanies this equipment provision. He urged the beneficiaries to utilize the tools diligently to ensure the profitability and long-term viability of their new agricultural and livestock operations.
Furthermore, he called upon the young entrepreneurs to fully embrace their roles and actively contribute to the economic development of their respective communities.
A national strategy for togolese food sovereignty
This timely initiative is an integral part of the « Training-profession and accompaniment for professional integration » project, initially launched in 2025 by the National Employment Agency (ANPE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Animal Resources, and Food Sovereignty.
Through this comprehensive program, Togo aims to move beyond purely theoretical training, fostering an employment policy more focused on generating tangible income-generating activities. The strategic choice of the agropastoral sector highlights this direction, with the ambitious goal of cultivating a new generation of young producers capable of transforming their acquired skills into sustainable businesses and making a lasting contribution to the nation’s food sovereignty.
