Belgian tactician Tom Saintfiet has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Mali national football team, as confirmed through an official announcement shared via Instagram on April 27. His departure was met with sincere appreciation from the Malian Football Federation (FEMAFOOT) and its president, Mahazou Cisset, who issued a formal statement on April 26 expressing deep gratitude for the coach’s dedicated service.
Saintfiet, who has earned widespread respect in African football circles, reflected warmly on his tenure, describing it as a period of “proud fulfillment and unwavering commitment, despite challenging circumstances.” He conveyed special thanks to the Malian people for their steadfast support, as well as to his players, technical staff, federation officials, and government representatives. He singled out the FEMAFOOT president for particular praise, calling him “a true gentleman who embodies dialogue and compromise.”
Record and achievements during his mandate
Since taking charge in August 2024, Saintfiet guided the Malian national team through 17 competitive matches—including qualifying campaigns for the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup, as well as the recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament. His squad secured 9 wins, 6 draws, and 2 losses, with Mali’s journey culminating in a quarter-final appearance against tournament champions and then title holders, Senegal.
A message of unity amid national challenges
In light of the ongoing security threats posed by extremist groups such as the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), Saintfiet also addressed the current difficulties facing Mali. He expressed heartfelt solidarity with the Malian people and the nation as a whole, urging compassion, unity, and collective strength during these trying times.
Saintfiet is widely recognized as a seasoned figure in African football management. Over his coaching career, he has led teams from several nations across the continent, including Gambia, Togo, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
