Tottenham faces Chelsea with Premier League survival still uncertain

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has issued a stark warning to his players ahead of their crucial Premier League showdown with Chelsea, emphasizing that the club’s fight for survival is far from over. Despite sitting comfortably above the relegation zone, the Italian coach insists the team cannot afford to ease up as they target a vital point at Stamford Bridge.

The Spurs currently hold a two-point advantage over West Ham, with a superior goal difference and one fewer match played. However, De Zerbi remains cautious, urging his squad to maintain their focus and intensity. “We cannot forget where we were a month ago,” he stated. “We are not safe yet. Before answering any questions, we must earn that point in the Premier League. We must fight and play well. Only then can we celebrate—or hold a press conference.”

Stamford Bridge: a fortress for Chelsea, a challenge for Spurs

Tottenham’s recent struggles at Stamford Bridge add another layer of difficulty to the task at hand. The club has won just once in its last 35 away league meetings with the Blues, a statistic that underscores the hostile environment they will face. De Zerbi acknowledged the challenge, describing the London stadium as “a tough venue where Chelsea have been exceptional over the past decades.” Still, he urged his players to approach the game as a fresh opportunity rather than an insurmountable obstacle.

Goalkeeper dilemma and Maddison’s return

One of De Zerbi’s key decisions ahead of the match revolves around his starting goalkeeper. First-choice Guglielmo Vicario is nearing full fitness after hernia surgery, but his recovery has opened the door for a fierce competition. Young Czech shot-stopper Antonin Kinsky has impressed in Vicario’s absence, creating a tactical conundrum for the Italian manager. “Vicario is fit,” De Zerbi noted. “I’ll decide tomorrow. It’s not difficult—it’s straightforward. Vicario is our number one, but we must consider form, fitness, and momentum. I have an excellent relationship with both players, and no matter the choice, things will run smoothly.”

Meanwhile, midfielder James Maddison is on track to return after a lengthy injury layoff, though his exact role in the upcoming fixture remains under review. “He had a slight issue at the start of the week but trained well yesterday and today,” De Zerbi explained. “He’s not yet ready for 90 minutes, so we’ll discuss his involvement tomorrow.” The manager also praised captain Cristian Romero, hinting at a possible return to action soon.
