Guardiola prioritizes squad rotation for his farewell celebration
In his final match at the Etihad, Guardiola opted for a comprehensive squad rotation, confirming Haaland’s exclusion.
With the Premier League title already secured by Arsenal following City’s midweek draw against Bournemouth, the Catalan tactician chose to emphasize a celebratory atmosphere and player preparation for upcoming international duties over fielding his strongest possible lineup.
A total of nine changes were implemented in the starting XI, a move designed to acknowledge the contributions of various players to City’s recent successes. “It’s a mix, many players who haven’t played for a long time,” Guardiola explained before kick-off.
“We want a standing ovation for Bernardo [Silva] and John [Stones]. If this were the final match to win the Premier League, the team selection would certainly not be the same.”
Focus shifts to international commitments
Beyond the sentimental occasion, Haaland’s absence was also a practical decision, allowing the prolific striker to join the Norwegian national team for upcoming World Cup fixtures. This marks the conclusion of another demanding season where he once again topped the scoring charts.
Despite missing the final matchday, Haaland remains virtually guaranteed to secure the Premier League Golden Boot. He holds a significant five-goal lead over his closest competitor, Igor Thiago of Brentford, having netted 27 times this season.
Guardiola acknowledged the physical strain on his squad, stating, “Many players have played a lot recently. They have been incredible for this club, and I am delighted to offer them playing time today.”
A tribute to departing legends
The lineup fielded against Aston Villa served as a tribute to City’s era of dominance, with Bernardo Silva and John Stones both starting. These two pivotal players are set to depart the club alongside Guardiola this summer, concluding their legendary careers at the Etihad Stadium. Notably, only Silva and Antoine Semenyo were retained from the starting XI that faced Bournemouth on Tuesday.
The defensive line saw reinforcements with the inclusion of Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, and Rico Lewis, while Phil Foden started in a playmaking role. By selecting this particular group, Guardiola provided supporters with a final opportunity to honor the core players who shaped his decade at the helm of the club.
Emery offers a respectful tribute to Guardiola
Before the match commenced, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery extended a gesture of respect to his counterpart, Pep Guardiola, presenting him with a miniature replica of the lion statue that stands proudly at Villa Park.
Emery, who has faced Guardiola 19 times throughout his career, lauded the man who has dominated English football since his arrival in 2016: “For me, he is the best coach, but he is also a fantastic person. I respect him because I find him humble. He is always very respectful towards me, and I also observe this with other coaches, both in football and in life.”
