The power plant Algeria is offering to the Republic of Chad marks a fresh chapter in deepening ties between Algiers and N’Djamena.
On Monday in N’Djamena, Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, alongside Chadian Prime Minister Allamaye Halina, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for this 40-megawatt solidarity power plant between the two nations.
Power plant construction entrusted to Sonelgaz International
This initiative represents another step forward in the relationship between Algiers and N’Djamena and follows the high directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The ceremony began with a detailed technical presentation covering engineering aspects, implementation stages and operation prospects, highlighting the importance of this infrastructure for energy cooperation between the two countries.
The project is overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, which entrusted its execution to Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group. Equipped with gas turbines, this plant aims to meet the growing electricity demand and enhance supply security for the capital N’Djamena and surrounding areas. Tasked by the president to represent Algeria, Prime Minister Ghrieb stressed the strategic significance of the project as one of the first tangible outcomes of commitments made between the two countries’ leaders.
For a strong strategic partnership
In his speech, Ghrieb highlighted the special attention President Tebboune gives to strengthening cooperation and solidarity with fellow African nations, and his personal commitment to supporting Chad’s development efforts, especially in vital sectors that improve living conditions. He added that this achievement reflects the firm political will uniting the leaders of the two brotherly countries and materializes the ambition to elevate Algeria-Chad relations to a robust strategic partnership based on effective solidarity, shared development and mutual interests.
President Tebboune remains dedicated to reinforcing fraternal ties between the two peoples and consolidating bilateral cooperation, Ghrieb said, noting that this dynamic contributes to the shared goal of building a more integrated and prosperous Africa. He described the project as one of the first concrete results of the new momentum set in motion by the official visit of the Chadian president to Algeria in April 2026. The important discussions between President Tebboune and his Chadian counterpart led to ambitious agreements and cooperation programs in several strategic sectors.
When cooperation serves regional stability
The prime minister also emphasized the African dimension of this initiative. He stated that the project reflects Algeria’s deep conviction that effective African cooperation can generate shared development through concrete achievements directly benefiting citizens. He said the Africa they believe in is one of active solidarity, concrete initiatives, productive investments and partnerships that create wealth for African peoples.
This vision is part of a broader approach to continental integration. Ghrieb recalled that Algeria and Chad pay particular attention to major structuring projects. The trans-Saharan highway, fiber optic interconnection and strengthening air transport and logistics will help open up interior regions and create new opportunities for trade and investment.
African solutions to African problems
Addressing regional issues, the prime minister reaffirmed the convergence of views between Algiers and N’Djamena. ‘We are determined to continue coordination and consultation on various regional and continental issues,’ he assured. He added that this approach reflects their common conviction of the shared destiny of their peoples and the need to promote African solutions to African problems while respecting state sovereignty.
Ghrieb renewed Algeria’s commitment to support Chad in its development efforts. ‘On behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, I reaffirm Algeria’s constant commitment to support the Republic of Chad and to strengthen bilateral partnership for development, stability and prosperity of our two countries,’ he declared.
