Mali’s coach Anthony Da Silva outlines ambitious plan for the Aigles
The newly appointed head coach of Mali’s national football team, Anthony Da Silva, has shared his vision for the squad following his official contract signing a month prior. Speaking to the media in Bamako on July 6, 2026, he outlined a project rooted in discipline, identity, and a clear playing style.
His mission is clear: to build a competitive team while fostering an environment of structure, high standards, and performance. “My goal is to bring joy back to Malian football fans. This won’t happen overnight—we’ll progress step by step,” he stated, balancing realism with ambition.
Building a team with strong principles
The coach emphasized strict yet inclusive selection criteria. “Patriotism, discipline, performance, and mindset—these are non-negotiable,” he declared. While openness remains a priority, he stressed that only players who meet these standards, whether based in Mali or abroad, will be considered.”
Age is not a barrier, he added: “From 17 to 35, if a player fits our framework, they’ll have the chance to represent Mali.”
A proactive and decisive playing approach
On the pitch, Da Silva envisions a Mali team that takes control of the game. “I want my players to be the ones dictating the tempo, holding possession, and dictating play. This is how we’ll impose our style,” he explained. He also called for sharper finishing in the final third, noting that a lack of killer instinct has hindered the team in recent years.
First major test: CAN 2027 qualifiers
The coach’s vision will face its first real challenge in September, when Mali kicks off its qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Drawn in a tough group alongside Cape Verde, Liberia, and Rwanda, the team will need to quickly prove its progress.
Cape Verde, in particular, stands out as a formidable opponent, having recently held powerhouse teams like Spain, Uruguay, and Argentina to draws in World Cup matches. Mali’s ability to navigate this group will be critical in assessing Da Silva’s early impact.
