Benin’s President appoints Claudy Siar to lead cultural diplomacy
Claudy Siar, the celebrated media personality and longtime host of Couleurs Tropicales on RFI, has been named as the President’s Special Envoy for Culture, Media, and National Visibility in Benin. The appointment, announced on June 3, 2026, marks a significant shift as Siar transitions from international broadcasting to a high-profile role within his home country’s government.
This move comes just months after Siar left RFI in March 2026, bringing to a close his 31-year tenure at the French international broadcaster. His departure coincided with the end of his contract and the conclusion of his iconic show, which had aired since 1995. While RFI cited a strategic shift toward music programming, Siar publicly attributed his departure to ideological differences and his vocal panafricanist stance, which often critiqued Western policies.
Siar’s new position represents a bold step in leveraging his global media experience to enhance Benin’s cultural footprint. Known for his passionate advocacy for African unity and progress, he brings a wealth of knowledge in media strategy and international relations to this government role. His appointment signals Benin’s commitment to strengthening its cultural diplomacy and media presence on the global stage.
Prior to his government appointment, Siar had already begun new ventures in the audiovisual sector, partnering with NewWorld TV to launch two channels: NewWorld Mix and NewWorld Muzik. These projects reflect his ongoing dedication to promoting African music and media content worldwide.
