Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Burkina Faso government has proudly announced a significant milestone: by June 30, 2026, over 1.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) successfully returned to their communities of origin. This encouraging development is a direct result of ongoing improvements in the security landscape across various regions that have been reclaimed by national forces.
Government officials indicate that these returns now encompass a remarkable 1,034 localities, marking a substantial increase from the 871 reported at the close of 2025. At the end of the previous year, the count of displaced individuals who had found their way back to their homes stood at an estimated 1.16 million.
These crucial figures emerged during the bi-annual performance review of the Ministry of Solidarity. Halfway through the 2026 fiscal year, the ministry has demonstrated a 46.06% execution rate of its committed objectives.
The assessment further highlights that comprehensive support was extended to more than 480,000 vulnerable individuals during the first six months of the year. Beneficiaries received vital assistance, including food supplies, essential goods, and tailored support aimed at facilitating their long-term recovery and reintegration.
Furthermore, authorities underscored the urgent need to accelerate the rehabilitation of housing units in the affected areas. They view this measure as fundamental to ensuring the sustained, voluntary return of populations and fostering their permanent resettlement under stable conditions.
