Cameroon’s cocoa quality drive: 35 verifiers complete export training
The National Cocoa and Coffee Board (ONCC), in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), concluded a crucial training session on June 26 in Douala.
Thirty-five export warehouse verifiers complete specialized training
For three intensive days, from June 24 to June 26, participants honed their expertise in crucial areas such as sampling methodologies, stringent quality control protocols, and efficient management of cocoa storage facilities designated for international export. This strategic initiative, as explained by Didime Olivier Tchoumi, UNIDO’s Senior Technical Advisor, is designed to significantly boost the international competitiveness of both Cameroonian cocoa and coffee. The training forms a vital component of the PICS-Cameroun project, backed by funding from Japan.
This development follows a major international triumph for Cameroonian cocoa. On Tuesday, February 20, 2026, Cameroon secured a prestigious gold medal at the 10th edition of the Cacao of Excellence Awards, held during the renowned Chocoa Trade Fair. This annual global event for the cocoa and chocolate industry saw nearly 191 samples from 45 different origins rigorously assessed for their quality, sustainability, and unique sensory profiles.
Out of all the entries, only 50 select lots received recognition from an esteemed international panel of sensory and industry experts. Cameroon’s sample, identified as n°167, distinguished itself by claiming the top spot in the highly competitive Africa & Indian Ocean category.
For Cameroon, this latest success builds upon a bronze recognition achieved in 2023, clearly signaling an upward trajectory and enhanced qualitative competitiveness of its beans in the lucrative ‘fine and flavour’ premium market segments. In these specialized markets, factors like distinctive taste, authenticity, and commitment to sustainability are paramount, often commanding prices significantly higher than those in the traditional commodity cocoa sector.
Beyond the immediate acclaim of a medal, this esteemed distinction solidifies Cameroon’s reputation as a prime origin capable of producing exceptional cocoa. It aligns perfectly with the growing demand from high-end chocolatiers and specialized international markets. Furthermore, this achievement is expected to stimulate increased investments in vital areas such as traceability systems, advanced technical training, and the structured development of cooperatives, all of which are indispensable for translating this qualitative excellence into tangible, long-term economic benefits for local cocoa producers.
