Bénin and Niger leaders meet in Niamey

The President of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni, concluded a two-day working visit to Niamey on June 2, 2026, marking a significant step in reaffirming bilateral ties with neighboring Niger. Upon landing at Diori Hamani International Airport, he received a warm official welcome from his Nigerien counterpart, General Abdourahamane Tiani, symbolizing the growing rapprochement between the two nations.

The visit progressed with a formal welcome ceremony, followed by a private meeting between the heads of state at the Nigerien Presidential Palace. This was succeeded by an extended working session involving key advisors from both delegations, focusing on shared priorities and regional challenges that impact both countries.

A joint communiqué issued after the talks highlighted the enduring historical bonds between Bénin and Niger, rooted in friendship and mutual cooperation. Both leaders expressed their commitment to strengthening these ties to better address the needs of their populations in security, stability, and economic progress.

Security and development take center stage

With the Sahel region facing persistent security threats, the discussions placed particular emphasis on terrorism and cross-border crime. The two presidents underscored the urgent need for joint action to counter these challenges and ensure sustainable development across West Africa. Their dialogue reflected a shared vision: stronger collaboration is essential to safeguard regional peace and unlock economic potential.

New initiatives to boost bilateral relations

The leaders announced several measures to enhance cooperation across political, economic, scientific, and cultural domains. Among the most notable decisions was the agreement to reopen the Bénin-Niger border, which had previously faced restrictions. To expedite this process, a joint expert committee has been established to assess current barriers and propose solutions within 15 days.

At the end of the visit, President Tiani extended his appreciation to President Wadagni for the visit, while the Bénin leader praised the hospitality shown during his stay. In a gesture of reciprocity, President Wadagni invited President Tiani to undertake an official visit to Cotonou, an invitation warmly accepted. The details of this reciprocal visit will be coordinated through diplomatic channels, reinforcing the shared determination to build a stronger strategic partnership.
