Deadly Jnim assaults claim lives in five Mali villages near Bandiagara

The Jnim launched a series of coordinated assaults on the villages of Logo, Soulakanda, and Dimbal within the Dimbal commune, alongside Ogossagou and Kouroundé in the Bankass commune. These attacks occurred simultaneously between 5 PM and 6 PM. The militant group engaged in fierce combat with local Dozo traditional hunters, who often serve as a crucial supplement to the national army, or even fill a void in areas where military presence is lacking.
Reports from local officials, civil society representatives, and Dozo commanders indicate approximately twenty fatalities. This tragic toll includes both traditional hunters and innocent civilians. A Dozo leader expressed deep concern over the military’s perceived lack of response during these attacks, which have not been acknowledged through any official communiqué. Our inquiries directed to the Malian army regarding these incidents have unfortunately gone unanswered.
Rising fears of renewed attacks
In the aftermath of these brutal events, many residents have fled their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring communities, particularly Bankass. This locality is already grappling with a significant number of internally displaced persons. Observers are voicing apprehension about the humanitarian challenges that will arise from managing this new influx of displaced individuals. Earlier attacks in the same region at the beginning of the month had previously resulted in over fifty deaths, underscoring the persistent insecurity.
Previously, a Jnim spokesperson had issued threats, specifically targeting villages that provide sanctuary to Dozo hunter bases and those that refuse to comply with local agreements imposed by the jihadist group.
