DNCG imposes salary cap on Marseille and Lyon, Lyon stays in Ligue 1

The LFP’s financial watchdog has revealed the restrictions that both Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais must follow for the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season.

Both clubs had been under close scrutiny, and the ruling has finally arrived. On Friday, the DNCG announced the financial constraints for Marseille and Lyon. For the Phocaeans, the National Management Control Directorate has ordered a cap on wages and transfer compensation.

Lyon also faces a salary cap tied to the budget following the club’s recent ownership change. The decision came after the professional club control commission reviewed each team’s financial status for the upcoming campaign. In a press conference, Michele Kang confirmed that Lyon will remain in Ligue 1 and that she is now the majority shareholder of the Rhône-based club.

Marseille already penalised by UEFA

For OM, this decision comes less than ten days after UEFA fined them €10 million for breaching financial fair play rules. The Marseille side knew they were in the crosshairs of French football’s financial regulator.

The DNCG had stated on Tuesday that it had requested additional information from the Phocaean club, whose finances were weakened by a difficult 2025-2026 season on all fronts. In 2021 and again in 2023, Marseille had already been subjected to a salary cap.
