French prime minister in Morocco to boost strategic ties

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu arrived in Rabat on Wednesday evening for a two-day official visit aimed at revitalizing and deepening the strategic partnership between France and Morocco.

The visit follows a period of fluctuating relations, with both countries seeking to consolidate their cooperation across multiple sectors. Upon his arrival, Lecornu was greeted by Moroccan Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, accompanied by a delegation of twelve French ministers.

Key discussions and agreements

During his stay, the French Prime Minister and Aziz Akhannouch will hold a bilateral meeting before co-chairing the 15th edition of the High-Level Franco-Moroccan Meeting. This high-level dialogue, suspended since 2019, serves as a key platform for political and economic coordination between the two nations.

The discussions are expected to focus on several critical areas:

  • Economic exchanges and cross-investments to stimulate trade and business opportunities
  • Security and defense cooperation to address regional challenges
  • Energy and infrastructure development, including renewable energy projects
  • Cultural and academic exchanges to foster people-to-people ties

A total of fifteen agreements are set to be signed during the visit, covering sectors such as aviation, water management, strategic infrastructure, electrical interconnection, and security collaboration. A landmark cultural agreement is also expected, linking the Arab World Institute in Paris with Morocco’s Ministry of Culture to promote artistic, heritage, and academic exchanges.

Strengthening bilateral ties

This official visit underscores the mutual commitment to reinforcing the strategic partnership between France and Morocco, building on shared interests in stability, economic growth, and cultural exchange in the region.
