Libreville recently hosted a significant diplomatic event as the Chinese embassy commemorated the 99th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), emphasizing themes of peace, memory, and the robust Gabon-China partnership. Ambassador Zhou Ping of China in Gabon highlighted the flourishing relationship between the two capitals, noting that 2024 also marks the 52nd year since diplomatic ties were established between Gabon and China.
This milestone year will further be distinguished by a high-level visit: President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema is slated to travel to China in November at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, signaling a new chapter in bilateral relations.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Zhou reflected on pivotal milestones for Beijing in 2026, including the 90th anniversary of the Long March’s victory and the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). In his address to an audience of top officials and diplomats, he underscored the CPC’s century-long leadership in steering China toward national independence, economic progress, and the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the modern era.
“For over a hundred years, the CPC has led the Chinese people and army to make extraordinary contributions to national independence, national development, and the building of socialism with Chinese characteristics in this new era,” he stated.
Addressing the current global climate of turbulence and conflict, the ambassador reaffirmed China’s commitment to peace and dialogue. He spotlighted the four global initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping—centered on development, security, civilization, and international governance—as pillars of Chinese wisdom aimed at fostering global peace and sustainable progress.
Two concrete examples of cooperation were highlighted during the event: the 2024 visit of the “Ark of Peace,” a Chinese hospital ship that made its second stop in Gabon, and the recent reception of a Chinese military medical mission in Libreville. These initiatives have injected fresh momentum into Gabon-China military cooperation.
The evening also provided an opportunity to introduce the Gabonese public to the enhanced face of Chinese defense engagement in the country: Colonel Zhang Song, the newly appointed military attaché.
