Cécile Abadie, the European Union ambassador to Gabon, met with Libreville mayor Eugène Mba on June 22, 2026, in a meeting aimed at deepening ties between the capital and the EU. As local governments take on a larger role in carrying out development policies, the talks focused on cooperative projects that could support Libreville’s modernization goals and durably improve living conditions for residents.
During the discussions, the mayor outlined his key municipal actions, stressing the need for local governments to diversify their funding sources. He also highlighted the importance of international cooperation. Eugène Mba reiterated his commitment to strengthening decentralized cooperation to back projects in several priority sectors, making the city more attractive to technical and financial partners.
EU ambassador at the heart of institutional bridge-building
As the EU’s representative in Gabon, Cécile Abadie reaffirmed her institution’s dedication to maintaining close dialogue with Libreville’s municipal authorities. The ambassador outlined current strategic directions of the EU and noted that changes in the international context call for constant adaptation of cooperation mechanisms. The EU intends to continue exchanges with the city government in order to identify intervention areas that match local priorities and citizen expectations. This approach underscores the central role of the European diplomatic mission in fostering effective partnerships.
Waste management, considered a major challenge for Libreville, also featured prominently in the talks. Both sides agreed on the value of exploring new ways to support the municipality’s efforts in this strategic area. The EU is already working alongside Gabonese authorities on dismantling the Mindoube site and building a household waste recovery plant. The meeting reflects a shared will to consolidate ties between the city of Libreville and the European Union.
