The final matchday of the Ligue 2 season took an unexpected turn when referee halted the game indefinitely after spectators invaded the pitch at Stade Armand-Cesari, hurling smoke bombs in protest following Le Mans’ second goal in stoppage time.
Promotion secured for Le Mans, relegation for Bastia
Le Mans FC officially celebrated its long-awaited return to Ligue 1, a milestone described as “historic” and “emotional” by club president Thierry Gomez. The team’s 16-year absence from France’s top flight ended with this dramatic victory, marking a collective triumph for the entire club.
“This promotion to Ligue 1 is a victory for the whole club—a collective achievement,” Gomez stated. “The challenges ahead are significant, but our determination remains unwavering.”
Penalties for Bastia after pitch invasion
The French Football League (LFP) took swift action, imposing strict sanctions on SC Bastia, including two enforced matches without spectators and a suspended home game. The decision followed an emergency review of the incident, which ultimately validated Le Mans’ promotion while sealing Bastia’s relegation to the third tier.
The incident disrupted the official score validation until midweek, but Le Mans players wasted no time celebrating their achievement. On Saturday night, they marked the moment in the locker room, later joining fans outside their training facility under the cover of darkness.
Sixteen years after their last Ligue 1 appearance, Le Mans makes a triumphant return, achieving a second consecutive promotion after competing in the National league just one season prior.
Bastia’s struggles deepened further after a previous forfeit in December, when a smoke bomb thrown during a match against Red Star cost them the game on technical grounds.
