Touba has become the center of a fresh legal dispute following public statements attributed to Ousmane Sonko. A representative of the Collectif des petits-fils de Serigne Touba has formally filed a complaint with the Prosecutor of the Republic at the Dakar High Court, urging the initiation of a judicial investigation.
In the legal submission dated July 14, 2026, Serigne Modou Maroun Niang—identified as a Senegalese citizen, businessman, and grandson of the founder of the holy city—argues that the remarks attributed to the PASTEF leader significantly tarnish the reputation of Touba and offend its residents. The plaintiff specifically highlights a public statement in which Sonko allegedly claimed, “ill-gotten gains have infiltrated the holy city of Touba.”
According to the complaint, such assertions contradict the core values of Touba—faith, integrity, justice, and diligence—rooted in the teachings of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. The filing requests that the Prosecutor immediately launch an inquiry, summon Sonko to clarify his statements, and verify any supporting evidence he may possess.
The legal petition further demands a thorough investigation to determine the accuracy of the accusations. If substantiated, the complainants seek legal action against Sonko for potential offenses under Senegalese law, including defamation, dissemination of false information, or other relevant violations. The plaintiff claims to hold substantial evidence, including video recordings, transcripts of the remarks, and media publications.
This development unfolds amid escalating political tensions surrounding Sonko’s statements and could lead to further legal proceedings if the prosecution proceeds with the investigation.
