Mali football coach tom saintfiet steps down amidst turmoil

Since taking the helm in August 2024, Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet has decided to end his tenure as head coach of Mali’s senior national football team. His departure comes at a critical moment, as the nation faces escalating political unrest and security challenges, exacerbated by recent offensives from jihadist groups and Tuareg rebels.

In an emotional statement shared on his Facebook profile on April 27, 2026, Saintfiet reflected on his time in charge: « Today marks the end of my mission as head coach of Mali’s national team A. A mission I carried out with pride and dedication, despite the tough conditions. The time has come for me to move on to a new challenge ».

Saintfiet’s legacy: two losses in 17 games

Under Saintfiet’s leadership, Mali navigated a challenging qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup, maintaining resilience despite adversity. The team suffered only two defeats in 17 matches, including a narrow quarter-final loss to Senegal (1-0) in the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Saintfiet acknowledged the difficulties but emphasized football’s unifying power, stating: « In these particularly trying circumstances, my heart goes out to the Malian people and the nation as a whole. Above all, I send a message of compassion, solidarity, and unity. Football is a sport of togetherness, and I hope it continues to inspire peace and hope for Mali ».

The 53-year-old coach had previously been linked to the Ghana national team before ultimately ceding the role to Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz. The Malian Football Federation (FMF), represented by its president Mahazou Baba Cissé, formally recognized Saintfiet’s contributions and promptly initiated a search for his successor.
