The Moroccan government is accelerating efforts to secure the financial backing essential for the Africa Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP), a strategic cross-border energy initiative developed alongside Nigeria. Rabat has formally approached the United States Export-Import Bank (US Exim Bank) and the World Bank to raise the required $26 billion in funding, as confirmed by the Moroccan Ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani.
This ambitious project aims to connect Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves to West African nations and Europe, creating a new energy corridor that could reshape the region’s economic landscape. The pipeline’s development is seen as a cornerstone for energy diversification and regional cooperation, with Morocco positioning itself as a key transit hub.
Negotiations are currently underway to finalize the financial commitments, with both institutions evaluating the project’s long-term viability and socio-economic impact. If successful, the funding would cover the majority of the pipeline’s construction costs, enabling its phased implementation over the coming decade.
The initiative has already garnered significant attention from international investors, reflecting growing interest in Africa’s untapped energy potential. Officials emphasize that the pipeline could reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports in neighboring countries while boosting local industries through increased energy access.
