In the heart of Dakar, Senegal’s capital, the political landscape remains turbulent following the abrupt dismissal of the Prime Minister. The decision, announced in an official presidential statement, has left the nation’s political circles abuzz with reactions—ranging from acceptance to deep disappointment among the supporters of Ousmane Sonko.
For months, tensions between the two leading figures of the executive branch have simmered, culminating in this decisive move. As the dust settles, residents of Dakar find themselves grappling with a mix of resignation and frustration. Some view the dismissal as a necessary step toward stability, while others see it as a setback for the progress they believe Sonko represented.
« At long last, this is what we expected, » declares Ibrahima Dione, a lifelong supporter of Sonko from Dakar. « Ousmane Sonko has achieved more than any other minister in Senegal’s history. We will stand by him with even greater pride. Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s leadership has shown immaturity, and this decision reflects that. »
The dismissal extends beyond the Prime Minister to his entire cabinet, sending shockwaves through the ranks of the Patriotes africains du Sénégal pour le travail, l’éthique et la fraternité—PASTEF. While the party has yet to issue a formal statement, the absence of a strong response only amplifies concerns about the depth of the political crisis unfolding at the highest levels of government.
Modou Diaw, another Dakar resident, expresses his unease over the decision. « This sudden dismissal is destabilizing. I wasn’t expecting it. The announcement came as a surprise, and I don’t believe it’s beneficial for the country. What Senegal needs right now is job creation, not political upheaval, » he shares.
The political drama has unfolded against a backdrop of high expectations. PASTEF, led by Sonko, swept to victory in the first round of the March 2024 elections on promises of sweeping political reform and a relentless fight against corruption and mismanagement of public affairs. The party’s rise to power was fueled by passionate support, particularly among the youth, who saw in Sonko a beacon of change.
However, the Prime Minister’s tenure has been marked by controversy, with several public statements and actions drawing criticism. Observers suggest that these missteps may have contributed to the President’s decision to remove him from office.
Thierno Sow, a Dakar local, offers a more measured perspective. « Many Senegalese wanted this to happen. The President has the authority to appoint and dismiss officials, and if it’s for the greater good of the country, then it’s a justified move. »
