After weeks of intense negotiations, Toulouse FC and Sunderland have reached a complete agreement for the transfer of Dayann Methalie to the Premier League. The 20-year-old left-back is expected to undergo his medical examination with the English club in the coming hours.
The Ligue 1 side will lose another promising talent as Toulouse and the Black Cats finalized terms for the left-back’s move during the summer transfer window. The deal comes after Sunderland submitted a revised bid that Toulouse ultimately accepted following initial negotiations.
Initially, Toulouse had rejected an offer valued around €33 million for Methalie earlier in the week. However, a restructured proposal worth approximately €30 million—including performance bonuses—secured the deal. This compromise allowed both clubs to finalize the agreement that will see the French defender join Sunderland.
From Toulouse youth academy to Premier League stardom
Methalie, a product of Toulouse’s academy, has agreed to a five-year contract with Sunderland. The France Under-21 international enjoyed a standout season with his boyhood club, contributing with two goals and two assists in 30 appearances across all competitions.
The €30 million transfer marks another substantial financial boost for Toulouse, following the club’s recent sale of Brazilian midfielder Emersonn to Ipswich Town for around €32 million. Methalie’s departure underscores the club’s growing reputation for developing top-tier defensive talent.
Known for his attacking prowess as a wing-back, Methalie caught the attention of multiple European clubs during the transfer window. However, the forward-thinking project at Sunderland—led by manager Régis Le Bris—proved decisive in securing his signature.
