UNESCO honours INRA’s scientific role in preserving Morocco’s genetic biodiversity

On Monday in Rabat, Charaf Ahmimed, director of the UNESCO Regional Office for the Maghreb, formally acknowledged the outstanding scientific leadership of the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) in safeguarding Morocco’s genetic heritage and biodiversity.

INRA has long been at the forefront of documenting, conserving and valorising the country’s rich genetic resources, from traditional crop varieties to indigenous livestock breeds. This recognition by UNESCO highlights the institute’s critical contribution to both national food security and global biodiversity preservation.

The commendation by Mr Ahmimed underscores the importance of continued investment in agricultural research and the protection of genetic patrimony as a cornerstone of sustainable development in Morocco.
