The Bénin Senate has inaugurated its first governing body in a landmark session held in Porto-Novo, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s parliamentary evolution.
On 6 August 2026, newly sworn-in senators convened to elect their leadership, with Patrice Talon assuming the presidency of the upper chamber. The election sets the stage for the Senate to begin full legislative operations as envisaged by the Constitution.
Talon’s election as Senate President underscores his role in steering the chamber’s agenda, representing the institution, and ensuring its smooth functioning. His deputy, Louis Vlavonou, will provide critical support, stepping in during the president’s absence or incapacity.
The Senate’s structure was further solidified with the appointment of Alassane Séidou as rapporteur, responsible for overseeing parliamentary work, while Adidjatou Mathys was named as rapporteur substitute, ensuring continuity in leadership.
The newly formed Bureau represents the Senate’s first governing team, tasked with coordinating administrative and legislative activities, preparing sessions, and enforcing internal regulations.
