On Friday, June 19, 2026, Burundi once again voiced its “constant and unwavering” backing for Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory. This reaffirmation came after talks in Rabat between Burundi’s Foreign Minister Edouard Bizimana and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, during a working visit to the kingdom.

According to the joint communiqué released after the meeting, Bujumbura also reiterated its endorsement of the autonomy plan put forward by Morocco, which it described as the only credible and realistic path to resolving this regional dispute. Burundi further expressed its support for United Nations-led efforts to advance negotiations grounded in this initiative.

Renewed diplomatic support on the Sahara issue

This stance is part of a broader trend of African backing for Rabat on the national question. Additionally, Burundi welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, considering it a confirmation of the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the foundation for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political settlement. The reminder comes as Morocco continues its diplomatic drive to broaden and solidify support for its initiative.
