Niger pushes for nafissatou idé sadou’s un cedaw membership

Niamey, June 10, 2026 – Niger is taking bold steps to amplify its voice on the global stage, particularly in the realm of women’s rights. On Tuesday, June 9, Dr. Mamoudou Harouna Djingarey, President of the Council for National Rebuilding (CCR), welcomed a delegation in Niamey to strategize the promotion of Nafissatou Idé Sadou’s candidacy for the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

Strengthening civil society’s role in global advocacy

At the helm of the Femmes Action et Développement (FAD) NGO, Nafissatou Idé Sadou has garnered support from a dedicated coalition aiming to secure her position in this prestigious UN body. During their meeting at the CCR headquarters, the delegation reviewed progress on the nomination process and explored ways to expand public and institutional backing for Niger’s initiative.

The discussions also underscored the strategic importance of this candidacy. Advocates emphasize that a Nigerien woman’s election to CEDAW would not only highlight the nation’s expertise in gender equality but also elevate Niger’s profile in international forums dedicated to women’s rights and anti-discrimination policies.

Diplomatic ambitions and national pride

Dr. Djingarey reiterated his unwavering support for the initiative, urging the committee to persist in their efforts. He highlighted the critical need to showcase Niger’s human capital, positioning the country as a key player in shaping global conversations on human rights and gender equity beyond its borders.

The meeting was attended by prominent CCR officials, including Abdou Moustapha, General Rapporteur, and Cheikh Hassane Abdoulaye, Secretary of the Justice and Human Rights Commission. Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to this cause.

This push for Nafissatou Idé Sadou’s candidacy reflects Niger’s broader ambition to secure greater representation in international institutions. Should she succeed, Niger would gain a stronger voice in UN mechanisms focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment, while reinforcing its diplomatic influence on human rights issues worldwide.
